Norway’s seafood industry experienced significant growth in February, driven by increased global demand for its products, particularly salmon. This surge underscores the country’s strong position in the international seafood market.

Salmon exports have been at the forefront of this growth, with notable increases in both volume and value. In January 2025, Norway exported 95,100 tonnes of salmon, valued at NOK 10.9 billion, marking a 10% increase in volume compared to the previous year. The United States, Poland, and France emerged as the largest markets for Norwegian salmon during this period.

Rising Demand in China

China has also shown a significant uptick in demand for Norwegian seafood. The country’s seafood export value to China increased by NOK 887 million in 2024, reflecting a growing appetite for Norwegian products in the Chinese market.

Diversified Seafood Portfolio

Beyond salmon, other seafood categories have contributed to Norway’s export growth:

  • Trout: Exports reached 7,174 tonnes in January 2025, valued at NOK 687 million, with Ukraine, the USA, and Thailand being the primary markets.
  • Mackerel: January 2025 saw exports of 24,402 tonnes, amounting to NOK 737 million, a 93% increase from the previous year. South Korea, Vietnam, and China were key markets.
  • Herring: Exports totaled 20,997 tonnes in January 2025, valued at NOK 438 million, driven by strong fishing yields and rising prices. The Fishing Daily

Challenges and Sustainability Efforts

Despite the positive export figures, Norway’s seafood industry faces challenges, particularly concerning environmental sustainability. The decline in wild North Atlantic salmon populations has raised concerns. Norway’s environment minister has acknowledged the “existential threat” to wild salmon but has ruled out banning open-net fish farming at sea. Instead, efforts are focused on reducing pollution from salmon farming to acceptable levels, balancing food production with environmental sustainability.

Outlook

Norway’s seafood export growth in February highlights the industry’s resilience and adaptability to global market demands. As the country navigates environmental challenges, it continues to strengthen its position as a leading seafood exporter, catering to diverse markets worldwide.
