Cebu City Keeping an Eye on Possible Egg Supply Issues Amid Global Problems

Cebu City is watching its egg supply closely after the Department of Agriculture (DA) warned that there might be a national egg shortage by April. This possible shortage is mainly due to less poultry production and disruptions in global supply chains.

Erwin Goc-ong, who leads the Carbon Market Vendors Development Cooperative (CEMVEDCO), pointed out that Cebu relies heavily on imported eggs. He said, “A lot of our eggs come from other places. If those suppliers face problems, we will, too.” While he noted that supplies are stable for now, he warned that international issues, especially outbreaks of bird flu, might affect local markets.

Last year, an oversupply of eggs led to lower prices for farmers, causing many to cut back on their flocks. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. expressed worries about a possible egg shortage in the next two months if quick action isn’t taken. He explained, “Because of last year’s oversupply, the price dropped by P4 per egg, and many farmers lost money and had to sell off their hens to recover.”

In response, the DA is speeding up efforts like importing egg-laying chickens and seeking approval for bird flu vaccines. They have requested a P300-million budget for vaccine testing, with hopes to start vaccinating in March. The DA is also encouraging banks to help support the recovery of the egg industry.

Cebu City Councilor Jun Alcover, who heads the Committee on Agriculture, recognized the issue and mentioned plans to tackle it. “We haven’t met about this yet, but we could do so next week to make preparations,” Alcover said. The council intends to come up with strategies to lessen the potential effects on the city’s food supply and local businesses.

Vendors at Carbon Market are keeping a close watch on price changes amid fears of possible shortages. Goc-ong emphasized that local egg production alone can’t meet Cebu’s needs, and problems in global supply could lead to higher prices and rationing, similar to what has happened in other countries dealing with bird flu.

The DA’s proactive steps aim to stabilize egg production and prevent major price changes, ensuring food security in the months ahead.
