Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau delivered a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations, expressing concerns about the rise of authoritarianism worldwide and urging democracies to uphold their values through strategic trade and foreign policies. The speech, delivered in New York, touched on various global issues, with particular attention given to China and Russia.

Trudeau emphasized the need for like-minded democracies to collaborate in addressing the challenges posed by authoritarian regimes. While he acknowledged concerns about countries like China and Russia, he encouraged Canada and its allies to reinforce their commitment to human rights through economic incentives rather than punitive measures.

The Prime Minister cautioned against singling out specific nations and suggested a more collaborative approach to sourcing critical minerals from regions with stringent labor standards. He highlighted the importance of ethical practices, stating, “The lithium produced in Canada is going to be more expensive because we don’t use slave labor.”

Addressing China’s role in global affairs, Trudeau expressed hope for cooperation on environmental issues but noted China’s increasing disruption as a global power. Tensions between Canada and China have been apparent, with accusations of election meddling and controversial incidents, including alleged leaks from private discussions between Trudeau and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Trudeau commended European allies for transitioning away from Russian fossil fuels to invest in clean energy alternatives in response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine. The Canadian government has been vocal in condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with Trudeau describing it as “unprovoked and unjustifiable aggression.”

In the question-and-answer session, Trudeau highlighted Canada’s support for Ukraine, emphasizing the need for a political resolution to the conflict. He called for increased defense spending and underscored the importance of standing against authoritarian challenges to the democratic system.

While praising the audience for their efforts, Trudeau also urged the United States and its allies to move away from isolationism and address domestic issues like poverty and inequality. He acknowledged past oversights in turning a blind eye to authoritarianism and environmental concerns for economic prosperity.

The Canadian Prime Minister concluded by emphasizing the necessity of sharing progress and prosperity across the board, both internationally and domestically, to fulfill the promise of progress.
