Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has issued a warning to the country’s major grocery chains, including Walmart and Costco, regarding the escalating food prices. He indicated that the government might consider implementing new tax measures if these companies fail to present a viable plan to mitigate rising costs. Trudeau’s remarks came amidst growing public concern over high living expenses and his declining approval ratings.
During a caucus retreat in London, Ontario, Trudeau stated that the executives of the top five supermarket chains in Canada are expected to propose a strategy to combat soaring prices before Thanksgiving. He emphasized that failure to offer tangible relief for middle-class citizens could lead to further government intervention, including potential tax implications.
In a subsequent development, Federal Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne, responsible for innovation, science, and industry, announced a planned meeting with the CEOs of Canada’s large grocery chains in Ottawa. Champagne stressed the need for collaborative solutions to stabilize food prices and enhance competition in the Canadian market.
Trudeau highlighted the discrepancy between the record profits earned by these supermarket chains and the financial struggles faced by many Canadians. Grocery prices in Canada increased by 8.5% in July compared to the previous year, significantly surpassing the general inflation rate of 3.3%.
Retailers have attributed the price hikes to elevated costs from producers and suppliers, citing global factors such as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In response, the Retail Council of Canada urged the federal government to reconsider its approach, suggesting the temporary removal of the carbon tax on farmers, food processors, and distributors, and reevaluating the government’s planned plastic packaging targets, which could add approximately $6 billion annually to grocery costs.
