Supply Chain Report — Canada is taking a decisive step toward reinforcing its food supply chains as a new group of domestic producers shifts sourcing and processing activities back home. A recently announced initiative brings together nine projects spanning multiple provinces, all aimed at reducing reliance on imported inputs, expanding local processing capacity, and strengthening resilience across the agri-food supply chain.
The program focuses on increasing value-added food and ingredient production within Canada by encouraging businesses to source more locally grown crops and process them domestically. By shortening supply chains and keeping more stages of production within national borders, the initiative seeks to improve food security, create skilled jobs, and stabilize supply in the face of global trade uncertainty.
Government leaders emphasized that building stronger domestic supply chains is essential for long-term economic resilience. Investments under the program are designed to support innovation in food processing, promote sustainable production practices, and ensure that Canadian farmers and processors capture more value from locally produced crops.
Several of the supported projects illustrate how supply chains are being restructured. These include developing domestically produced alternatives to previously imported food ingredients, upcycling agricultural by-products into high-protein food inputs, and reformulating consumer products to rely exclusively on Canadian-grown plant proteins. Together, these efforts aim to reduce exposure to international supply disruptions while improving efficiency and traceability across the food system.
In total, $1.7 million has been committed to the nine projects through a combination of public funding and private-sector investment. The initiative also supports broader national goals to scale up the plant-based food and ingredient sector, positioning Canada as a competitive and reliable supplier in global agri-food markets.
A third intake for the program is now open, signaling continued momentum to strengthen domestic supply chains and support a more self-reliant, sustainable food system.
