In response to recent sanctions imposed by the United States, the government of Republika Srpska, the Serb-dominated entity within Bosnia, has transferred its internet domain to Serbia after its previous domain was suspended on October 26.
The Republika Srpska government press office confirmed that, following the decision by the U.S. domain registrar, they have taken the necessary steps to establish their online presence under the new domain. As of now, all systems are operational, and communication with the public is being restored through email addresses using the .rs domain. The RS government has emphasized that government data remains secure, and there have been no disruptions in functionality.
According to their statement, the RS government has secured the use of the new domain until the end of February 2025. Additionally, they have announced their intention to legally challenge the actions taken by the United States. However, they did not disclose the identity of the new domain provider.
The RS government stated, “The Government of the Republika Srpska will engage legal experts to prepare a lawsuit against the company which, without prior notice and notification, prevented the use of the Government of the Republika Srpska’s website.”
On October 20, the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) imposed sanctions on Igor and Gorica Dodik, the children of Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik. OFAC also targeted four legal entities that were allegedly involved in facilitating corruption within the Republika Srpska entity, allowing the President to misuse public funds for personal enrichment.
Notably, the Republika Srpska government has historically refrained from using the Bosnian national domain, or the Bosnian government’s official domain, citing concerns that it would signify a connection with the larger Bosnian state.
