President Joe Biden has issued a warning about the potential economic consequences, including a recession and job losses, if the $31.4 trillion debt ceiling is not raised before the looming deadline. The urgency comes as the Biden administration faces challenges in reaching an agreement with congressional Republicans on this critical matter.

During a speech in New York state, Biden accused Republicans of jeopardizing the economy by demanding substantial spending cuts in exchange for agreeing to raise the debt limit. The president emphasized the risks of threatening a recession and potentially putting millions of jobs at stake, urging a swift resolution to avoid undermining America’s global standing.

With the US Treasury Department indicating a potential inability to meet financial obligations by June 1, the need for bipartisan cooperation on the debt ceiling issue is crucial. Republicans have insisted on tying their support for the increase to retroactive spending cuts, while Biden prefers to negotiate the budget separately.

In April, House Republicans proposed a plan aiming for $4.5 trillion in deficit savings through spending cuts, the elimination of tax breaks for clean energy, and the reversal of Biden’s student debt forgiveness plan. The lack of a consensus on this matter has heightened concerns about the possibility of default.

A meeting between Biden and congressional leaders is scheduled for Friday to address the impending default crisis. Last week, White House economists highlighted the potential severe consequences of a prolonged default, estimating the loss of up to 8 million jobs and a 50% reduction in the value of the US stock market.

Despite the challenges in negotiations, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell reassured that Congress would prevent a default, emphasizing that the United States would not default on its financial obligations. The upcoming discussions will play a crucial role in determining the path forward and averting a potential economic crisis.
