The Biden administration has announced a significant development in its supply chain management efforts, revealing that it has begun to integrate data on inland freight hubs into its Freight Logistics Optimization Works (FLOW) initiative. This marks a new milestone in the administration’s strategy to enhance the efficiency of the U.S. supply chain.
Launched in March 2022 in response to pandemic-induced disruptions, the FLOW initiative is a public-private partnership designed to collect, aggregate, and anonymize data on inbound containerized freight. The program aims to balance future demand volumes with existing regional capacities, facilitating the movement of ocean containers more effectively.
With the inclusion of destination data for rail terminals and warehouses, the initiative now offers critical insights that can help mitigate supply chain delays and assist stakeholders in making informed capacity decisions at U.S. ports.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg commented on the progress, stating, “Two years ago, we launched FLOW, the first public-private platform of its kind to share data on supply chains to help goods move quickly and cheaply.” He added that the efforts of the Biden-Harris Administration to strengthen American supply chains have contributed to reducing inflation from its pandemic peaks.
The administration also attributes the 80 percent reduction in inflation since 2022 to recent enhancements in supply chain infrastructure. With the expansion of the FLOW initiative, the government anticipates even greater benefits for American families and businesses.
