Australia’s Exports to China Soar to Record Levels Amid Diplomatic Easing

In March, Australia experienced a significant surge in exports to China, reaching record highs as the Asian nation increased its intake of iron for steel production and eased restrictions on thermal coal shipments. According to data released on Thursday, Australian goods’ exports to China amounted to 19 billion Australian dollars ($12.71 billion), marking a 31 percent year-on-year increase and surpassing the previous peak observed in mid-2021.

This notable boost contributed to Australia achieving its second-highest total trade surplus on record, reaching 15.3 billion Australian dollars ($10.2 billion). The surplus serves as a positive impact on mining profits and tax receipts.

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed a 24.3 percent increase in export volumes of iron ore lumps and a 17.7 percent rise in iron ore fines shipments to China compared to the previous month. Additionally, shipments of thermal coal to China experienced a substantial 125 percent volume surge in March compared to February, offsetting a decline in exports to Japan.

The surge in exports follows China’s effective end to an unofficial ban on Australian coal in January. This move allowed customs clearance for the first time since 2020 when China initiated trade restrictions on various Australian products during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Diplomatic relations between China and Australia have shown signs of thawing, as evidenced by the leaders’ meeting late last year. In March, both nations agreed to address a World Trade Organization dispute regarding Chinese barley tariffs, aiming for resolution within three months. These developments indicate a positive shift in the trade dynamics between the two countries.
