Australia’s center-left Labor government has unveiled plans to allocate 14.6 billion Australian dollars ($9.88 billion) in the federal budget to provide relief for the cost of living, emphasizing its commitment to avoiding inflationary impacts. The announcement on Monday aims to directly address price pressures and inflation, with the federal government highlighting the importance of easing the financial burden on families and businesses.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers, in a statement preceding Tuesday’s federal budget release, described the cost-of-living relief as the centerpiece of the budget. He emphasized the government’s careful calibration to alleviate financial pressures without contributing to inflation. The move comes as inflation, while slightly retreating in the first quarter, remains at near 30-year highs of 7 percent.

The financial assistance, spread over four years, will specifically target over 5 million low-income families, small businesses, and pensioners grappling with high power bills. Chalmers has consistently emphasized a balanced approach to the budget, aiming to provide relief without exacerbating inflationary pressures. This approach aligns with the recent rate rise by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), which surprised markets and contradicted expectations for a prolonged pause.

In its statement on Friday, the RBA warned of potential upside risks to inflation due to low productivity growth, increasing energy prices, and a surge in rents. The relief measures announced by the government follow earlier commitments, including setting aside 11.3 billion Australian dollars ($7.64 billion) for wage increases for aged care workers over four years. Additionally, the government introduced a 5 percent tobacco tax and allocated 2.4 billion Australian dollars ($1.62 billion) for additional taxes on oil and gas producers.

While the budget is expected to reveal a sharp reduction in the deficit, driven by tax windfalls from commodity exports, fiscal challenges are anticipated on the horizon. The government remains focused on addressing the pressing concerns of Australians while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
