Swinburne University of Technology and the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) have announced the launch of the Swinburne-IITH Manufacturing, Materials, Energy, and Communication Technologies (SIMMECT) Joint Research Institute. The initiative aims to advance research and collaboration in key technological areas, with a strong focus on manufacturing.
According to a statement from Swinburne University, the institute will explore advancements in surface coatings, material development, additive manufacturing, and digital manufacturing technologies. In addition, researchers will work on projects related to decarbonization in heavy industry, critical minerals, e-waste recycling, and emerging fields such as 6G and quantum sensors.
Professor Karen Hapgood, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at Swinburne, described the initiative as an important step in strengthening research ties between the two institutions.
“The establishment of the SIMMECT Joint Research Institute will enhance collaboration between Swinburne and IITH, expanding opportunities for groundbreaking global research and training,” she said.
The partnership will also facilitate joint PhD supervision, researcher and student exchange programs, and collaborative research funding opportunities. Additionally, workshops, conferences, and participation in broader research initiatives will be key components of the collaboration.
Professor B.S. Murty, Director of IITH, highlighted the long-term impact of the initiative on industry and academic research.
“This partnership will create a sustainable framework for long-term cooperation between IITH and Swinburne, strengthening innovation and real-world contributions to industry and society,” Professor Murty stated.
He noted that 38 scholars have already completed partnered PhD programs between the two institutions since 2017, demonstrating an existing strong research connection.
The research institute will receive initial seed funding from both Swinburne University and IITH to support its establishment and future research initiatives.
