The Australian government has projected the country’s first balanced annual budget in 15 years, according to Treasurer Jim Chalmers. Despite this optimistic outlook, Chalmers cautioned that economic challenges, such as inflation, could lead to increased debt in the coming years.

The announcement, made on Tuesday, anticipates a surplus for the fiscal year ending June 30, supported by high commodity prices, robust income tax revenue due to a low unemployment rate of 3.5%, and favorable economic conditions. This marks a significant turnaround since the global financial crisis in 2008, which pushed the Australian economy into deficit.

While the precise size of the surplus was not disclosed, media reports suggest it could be around 4 billion Australian dollars ($2.7 billion). In October of the previous year, the government’s interim budget forecast predicted a deficit of 36.9 billion Australian dollars ($25 billion) for the current fiscal year, considerably lower than the 78 billion Australian dollars ($53 billion) forecasted by the previous government in March.

Australia’s gross debt as a percentage of GDP was projected to reach 37.3% (or 927 billion Australian dollars) by the end of the current fiscal year, with further increases expected in the coming decade.

The upcoming budget, set to be detailed later on Tuesday, will allocate 14.6 billion Australian dollars ($9.9 billion) in measures to assist low and middle-income earners in coping with inflation. The country’s central bank has raised concerns about elevated inflation, leading to the 11th interest rate hike since May of the previous year.

Chalmers emphasized that the spending measures in the budget are designed to address cost-of-living pressures without exacerbating inflation. Additionally, the budget will encompass the initial costs associated with the AUKUS agreement, which involves the acquisition of eight submarines powered by US nuclear technology.

While celebrating the current surplus, Chalmers acknowledged that maintaining such budgets may become more challenging in the coming years due to anticipated economic pressures.
