MANILA – The Department of Transportation (DOTr) highlighted on Friday that countries in Asia are at the forefront of the global movement toward sustainable transport.
In a statement, DOTr Undersecretary Timothy John Batan acknowledged the significant strides made by Asian nations in advancing carbon neutrality and improving economic resilience through transport-related initiatives.
Batan pointed out key developments such as reducing fossil fuel subsidies, expanding road and rail networks that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and playing a central role in the global electric vehicle (EV) revolution.
“These achievements position Asia as a leader in the global transition to sustainable transport,” Batan said.
Furthermore, he noted that Asia Pacific’s climate ambitions have grown by 93 percent in 2024, driven by increased recognition of the climate crisis.
Batan emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum and overcoming obstacles in the transport sector to ensure continued progress toward achieving the SDGs.
He also encouraged the region’s transport sector to be proactive in addressing challenges, emphasizing the responsibility to drive change rather than merely react to it.
Batan’s remarks were made during his participation in the 16th Regional Environmentally Sustainable Transport Forum in Asia, which concluded on Thursday. The forum, held from Tuesday to Thursday, focused on sustainable urban mobility solutions, aiming to empower cities to transition to low-carbon pathways while ensuring economic resilience in line with SDGs. The event featured discussions on urban access, international initiatives, and efforts toward the Aichi 2030 Declaration and the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport. (PNA)
