Africa’s largest diesel and aviation fuel refinery, the Dangote refinery, has commenced production, marking a significant development for Nigeria after facing years of construction delays. Built by Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, the refinery has a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) and has the potential to reshape Nigeria’s energy landscape by reducing its dependence on fuel imports.

The megaproject, situated on 2,635 hectares at the Lekki Free Zone on the outskirts of Lagos City, incurred an estimated cost of $19 billion. While the company expressed optimism that the products would hit the market this month, the exact timeline for reaching full production capacity or initiating petrol refining remains unclear.

Despite being a leading energy producer in Africa, Nigeria has heavily relied on fuel imports due to insufficient refining capacity. The Dangote refinery aims not only to make Nigeria self-sufficient in fuel but also to enable the country to export fuel to neighboring West African nations, potentially transforming oil trading dynamics in the Atlantic Basin.

According to company officials, test runs could commence this week following the arrival of the refinery’s sixth crude oil cargo on January 8. Nigeria has historically exchanged crude oil valued at billions of dollars for subsidized petrol to maintain affordable domestic prices. This practice has strained foreign exchange reserves during periods of dwindling oil revenues and currency shortages.

Initially slated to open in 2021, the Dangote refinery was officially inaugurated earlier this year by then-President Muhammadu Buhari, with operations expected to begin in June. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who assumed office in May last year, has implemented economic reforms, including ending the long-standing fuel subsidy and floating the naira currency. These measures are aimed at attracting foreign investment and fostering long-term economic growth in Nigeria.
