Africa has an opportunity to become a strategic contributor to the global semiconductor supply chain as demand for chips expands beyond artificial intelligence into healthcare, energy, transportation, manufacturing and agriculture.
The rapid growth of AI is concentrating investment in advanced chips and data-center infrastructure, creating opportunities but also increasing the risk of shortages and higher costs for other industries that depend on semiconductors.
Rather than attempting to replicate major chip-manufacturing hubs, African countries could focus on practical segments such as assembly, testing and packaging, semiconductor materials, components manufacturing and chip design.
Several countries already have capabilities that could support this development, while regional cooperation could allow different economies to specialize and connect their strengths across a broader semiconductor ecosystem.
Building this capacity would require investment in engineering talent, reliable energy, industrial infrastructure, research and development, and international partnerships. The African diaspora could also contribute expertise, training, investment networks and technical knowledge.
A coordinated regional approach could help Africa attract new investment while giving global manufacturers additional sourcing options, talent pools and production corridors.
As companies increasingly prioritize geographically diversified supply chains, Africa has an opportunity to strengthen its position in the global semiconductor ecosystem and support the long-term resilience of critical technology supply chains.
