Artificial intelligence (AI) has garnered significant attention from leading computer scientists and technologists, who are warning of potential risks that they believe require global action. In a brief statement released by the Center for AI Safety, a San Francisco-based research and advocacy group, a group of AI experts and prominent figures emphasize the need to address the “risk of extinction” associated with AI.

The statement asserts that mitigating the risk posed by AI should be treated as a global priority, alongside other large-scale societal risks such as pandemics and nuclear war. Notable signatories include technology experts like Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI; Geoffrey Hinton, often referred to as the “godfather of AI”; and Audrey Tang, Taiwan’s digital minister. The list also includes prominent figures such as neuroscientist Sam Harris and musician Grimes.

This warning comes on the heels of an open letter signed by Elon Musk and other high-profile individuals in March, which called for a six-month pause in the development of AI more advanced than OpenAI’s GPT-4. The letter emphasized the need for powerful AI systems to be developed only when there is confidence that their effects will be positive and manageable in terms of risks.

AI’s rapid advancement has sparked concerns about potential negative consequences for society, including concerns about mass job displacement, copyright infringement, the proliferation of misinformation, and political instability. Some experts have even voiced fears about the possibility of humanity losing control over AI technology.

Although current AI has not achieved artificial general intelligence (AGI), which would allow it to make independent decisions, researchers at Microsoft reported in March that GPT-4 displayed “sparks of AGI” and demonstrated the ability to solve complex and diverse tasks across various fields, from mathematics to law and beyond, without specific prompts.

Geoffrey Hinton, a renowned computer scientist, left his position at Google last month to dedicate more time to advocating for AI risk awareness.

Sam Altman, during a recent appearance before the United States Congress, called for the swift development of AI technology regulations and suggested a licensing-based approach. Various countries, including the United States, are actively working on legislation that balances oversight with technological advancement.

The European Union aims to pass AI legislation categorizing it into four risk-based categories by the end of the year. China has also taken steps to regulate AI, enacting laws governing deep fakes and mandating that companies register their algorithms with regulatory authorities. Additionally, Beijing has proposed strict rules to control politically sensitive content and requires developers to obtain approval before releasing generative AI-based technology.

AI continues to evolve and integrate into our daily lives, addressing its potential challenges and risks remains a critical aspect of its development on a global scale.
