Travis Dardar, a fisherman and member of the Isle de Jean Charles Tribal Community in Louisiana, finds himself caught between environmental concerns and economic interests as Venture Global’s Calcasieu Pass 2 (CP2), a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal, faces approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the Department of Energy. CP2 is one of over 20 proposed LNG export terminals in the United States, aiming to contribute to the country’s status as the world’s largest LNG exporter.

Dardar, twice displaced due to fossil fuel-related activities, highlights the impact of LNG terminals on his fishing livelihood and the broader Louisiana coastal community. He and other activists argue that LNG development is detrimental to the fishing industry, contributing to the buyout of fishing docks and posing risks to the environment.

Amid concerns about climate change and the ecological vulnerability of the region, the debate over CP2’s approval underscores the complexity of balancing economic interests with environmental sustainability. While the fossil fuel industry touts LNG as “clean energy,” critics emphasize its methane content, a potent greenhouse gas.

Venture Global contends that the CP2 project will generate over 1,000 permanent jobs in Cameron Parish and position LNG as a replacement for coal in certain countries, reducing emissions. However, a recent study challenges this narrative, suggesting that when considering the entire lifecycle of exported LNG, it could be 24 percent worse than coal.

The looming decision on CP2 places the Biden administration in a pivotal position, prompting calls from environmental groups, lawmakers, and residents to deny the permit. The fishing industry, a vital component of Louisiana’s economy, fears the potential collapse of its livelihood if LNG construction continues.

Critics argue that the US, as the largest historical emitter of greenhouse gases, needs to address its emissions reduction targets more comprehensively. The emissions from exported LNG are not currently included in domestic calculations, raising concerns about the overall impact on global climate goals.

The Biden administration faces pressure to prioritize climate considerations over economic interests, the outcome of the CP2 decision could shape the trajectory of LNG development in the US and influence its standing in the global climate conversation. The debate encapsulates the broader challenge of navigating the transition to cleaner energy sources while addressing the social and economic implications for communities on the front lines of such developments.
