Tesla, the renowned electric vehicle manufacturer, is reportedly reducing its workforce in the battery production segment of its Shanghai factory, as per information shared by Bloomberg News. The exact number of affected employees and the specific rationale behind these layoffs remain unclear, as stated in Bloomberg’s report released on Friday.

Tesla has not provided an immediate response to the inquiry from Reuters regarding this development.

This news of layoffs at Tesla’s Shanghai facility was initially brought to light by Deep Analysis, a local online news platform, on Thursday. According to their report, the number of workers on the factory’s two battery production lines is less than 1,000.

The Shanghai Gigafactory, which stands as Tesla’s largest and most efficient production site, is known to employ around 20,000 workers. This workforce includes staff in assembly lines for Tesla’s popular models, the Model Y and Model 3.

In a separate announcement on Friday, Tesla introduced a new sales initiative in China, the world’s leading market for electric vehicles. The company is offering a cash incentive of 3,500 yuan (approximately $483) to new buyers of its Model Y and Model 3 vehicles. To qualify for this rebate, new buyers need to present a referral from an existing Tesla owner.

Tesla is providing new buyers with complimentary access to its enhanced autopilot driver-assistance system for a period of 90 days. This move is seen as part of Tesla’s strategy to intensify competition in the electric vehicle market in China.
