In a recent alert, the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) has issued a warning to residents regarding a growing trend of scammers impersonating law enforcement officers. The department has reported an increase in cases where individuals receive phone calls from fraudsters claiming to be police officers, using this pretense to extort money from unsuspecting victims.

The SAPD has highlighted that these scammers often use sophisticated tactics to make their calls appear legitimate. They may use caller ID spoofing technology to display official-looking phone numbers and provide detailed personal information about their targets, which they may have obtained through various means. The impostors typically claim that the victim has an outstanding warrant, unpaid fines, or is otherwise in legal trouble, and they demand immediate payment to resolve the issue.

One common strategy involves instructing victims to purchase prepaid debit cards or gift cards and then provide the card numbers to the scammers. Once the fraudsters have this information, they can quickly drain the funds, leaving the victims with little recourse. In some cases, scammers have also asked for bank account details or requested wire transfers.

The SAPD emphasizes that no legitimate law enforcement officer would ever ask for payment over the phone or demand gift cards as a form of payment. Residents are urged to be cautious and to verify any suspicious calls by contacting the police department directly. The department also advises never to provide personal or financial information to unknown callers.

To help combat this issue, the SAPD is working to educate the public about the signs of these scams and how to protect themselves. They recommend the following steps:
– Be wary of unsolicited phone calls from individuals claiming to be law enforcement officers.
– Do not provide personal or financial information over the phone.
– Hang up and contact the police department directly using a verified phone number if you receive a suspicious call.
– Report any scam attempts to the authorities.

The SAPD is committed to investigating these scams and bringing the perpetrators to justice. They encourage anyone who has been targeted by such a scam to come forward and provide any information that could assist in their investigations.

As scammers continue to develop new tactics, staying informed and vigilant is crucial for all residents. The SAPD will continue to provide updates and resources to help the community protect itself from these fraudulent schemes.

For further information or to report a scam, residents can contact the San Antonio Police Department’s non-emergency number.
