UPS has disclosed plans to reduce its workforce by 12,000 positions due to a decrease in delivery demand, highlighting a trend that has seen the company decrease its total number of employees by 43,000 over the past three years.
By the end of 2023, UPS reported a workforce of 500,000, down from its peak of 543,000 in 2020, indicating an approximate 8% decline in staffing levels. This adjustment follows a period during the pandemic when an upsurge in deliveries necessitated significant hiring across the delivery sector.
The trend of workforce reduction is not exclusive to UPS, as similar strategies have been observed within the industry. FedEx, a key competitor, has also undertaken significant cuts, reducing its U.S. workforce by approximately 29,000 in the fiscal year 2023, as stated by CEO Raj Subramaniam. These reductions came in the wake of FedEx announcing cuts exceeding 10% of its officer and director level staff.
For 2024, UPS has indicated that the majority of the job reductions will affect management and contracted roles, with an expectation that 75% of these cuts will occur in the first half of the year. The company projects that these measures will yield a financial benefit of $1 billion.
Technological advancements, particularly in automated delivery systems and AI machine-learning, have also contributed to the decision to reduce staff. These technologies have improved efficiency in UPS’s sorting hubs by nearly 10%, saving $889 million in its U.S. operations during the second quarter alone. Additionally, a reduction in volume at non-automated facilities by 18% has allowed for the closure of certain operations and a 7% reduction in operational staff.
UPS aims to enhance its operational efficiency and financial health through these workforce adjustments, particularly by focusing on management and operational logistics. The company may also consider restructuring or merging operational regions as part of its strategy to streamline operations further.
