China has raised concerns regarding Taiwan’s semiconductor industry, stating that the island is strengthening its ties with the United States through its advanced chip sector.
According to reports in U.S. media, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker and a key supplier to companies such as Apple and Nvidia, has been in discussions about a potential stake in Intel. However, neither TSMC nor Intel has confirmed these reports, and Taiwan’s government has stated it has not received any overseas investment applications from TSMC.
Speaking at a press conference in Beijing, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, commented on the issue, suggesting that Taiwan’s semiconductor industry was being leveraged to strengthen external partnerships.
Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council responded by emphasizing the strategic importance of TSMC to Taiwan’s economy and technological leadership. The Council stated that it would collaborate with the industry to ensure Taiwan maintains its competitive edge in semiconductor technology.
TSMC has declined to comment on the matter.
The United States remains a key international partner to Taiwan, providing support in multiple sectors, including defense and trade.
