The Philippines has recently ratified the second protocol of the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA), marking a significant step forward in enhancing opportunities for the nation’s micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). This announcement was made by President Marcos during his address at the leaders’ plenary session of the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit, held in Melbourne.

The protocol is designed to provide substantial support to MSMEs by enabling easier access to international markets, increasing their integration into global value chains, and promoting the adoption of e-commerce. President Marcos expressed confidence that these measures will help MSMEs respond effectively to the dynamic and multi-dimensional challenges present in the current business environment.

The signing of the agreement is seen as part of broader efforts to strengthen supply chain resilience, expand trade and investment opportunities, and foster inclusivity and sustainable development across the region. President Marcos highlighted that the AANZFTA is expected to complement other regional efforts, including the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), further enhancing economic cooperation within Asia and with external partners.

President Marcos also reflected on the positive discussions at the preceding CEO Forum, noting that the insights shared there provided valuable momentum for strengthening economic ties under the frameworks of AANZFTA and RCEP. He underlined the importance of these agreements in providing a robust legal and operational framework that promises a more prosperous future for the region.

In addition to these trade agreements, President Marcos welcomed Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040, which aims to broaden and deepen the economic relationships between ASEAN nations and Australia. This strategy aligns with several key areas that are crucial for the future development of the Philippines and its ASEAN partners, including agriculture, food security, the digital economy, infrastructure, tourism, and healthcare.

President Marcos concluded by stating his anticipation for expanded collaboration in these critical sectors. He emphasized that such cooperation is essential for building a future where Filipinos and other ASEAN citizens can enjoy a comfortable, secure, and prosperous life. This alignment of regional trade agreements and strategic economic plans is poised to enhance the economic landscape of Southeast Asia significantly.
