Eskom, South Africa’s state power utility, has cautioned the nation to brace for an exceptionally challenging winter, predicting potential electricity cuts at an unprecedented level due to the country’s severe power crisis. The struggling utility is already enforcing scheduled load shedding of more than 10 hours daily, primarily attributed to breakdowns in Eskom’s aging coal power stations. With winter approaching, the demand for power is expected to surge, exacerbating the existing supply-demand gap.

Eskom Group Executive for Transmission, Segomoco Scheppers, stated that this winter could witness the implementation of “Stage 8” power cuts, requiring up to 8,000 megawatts to be shed, resulting in 16 hours of outages in a 32-hour cycle. Scheppers emphasized the necessity of these cuts to prevent a national grid collapse, highlighting the alternative of a blackout as a highly undesirable scenario.

South Africa’s power crisis has deepened over the past year, impacting various sectors and threatening price increases. Analysts attribute the situation to underinvestment in the maintenance of aging coal plants, affecting Eskom’s capacity to provide a consistent power supply. Corruption, sabotage, wage disputes, and strikes by Eskom’s workforce have also contributed to the challenges.

The economic repercussions of the power cuts have been significant, with Eskom estimating a reduction of approximately 5% in the country’s GDP in 2022. The Black Business Council has highlighted the devastating impact of the escalating electricity crisis on social and business activities.

In a separate development, South Africa plans to auction at least 10 new onshore blocks for shale gas exploration in the environmentally sensitive Karoo region. This move is part of the country’s strategy to explore alternative energy sources amid the power crisis. The auction, expected in 2024 or 2025, will be the first competitive auction for oil and gas resources in South Africa. The Karoo Basin is estimated to hold significant shale gas resources, with potential implications for addressing the country’s energy needs. However, challenges such as environmental concerns and regulatory uncertainties have delayed previous attempts at shale gas exploration in the Karoo basin.
