Giant Eagle, an East Coast supermarket chain, is gearing up to open its inaugural automated micro-fulfillment center (MFC) in Pittsburgh. This development is evidenced by recent job postings on the company’s website. The new facility, located at 1775 S. Braddock Ave., is designed to streamline curbside pickup orders, stocking center store goods along with chilled and frozen items.
The company is actively hiring for various roles essential to the MFC’s operation and has scheduled an open house event at the facility for January 24. The MFC will utilize a tote-based system to facilitate product movement.
Although a Giant Eagle spokesperson confirmed the ongoing recruitment for the new MFC, they offered limited information about the facility’s specifics. The spokesperson stated, “While we are in the process of hiring for this location, it is still a little bit early for us to share additional detail about the space.”
This initiative follows significant changes in Giant Eagle’s leadership. Last year, the company saw the departure of its CEO, Laura Shapira Karet, known for her focus on technology-driven projects. Bill Artman, another long-serving executive at Giant Eagle, succeeded Karet.
During Karet’s tenure, Giant Eagle introduced checkout-free shopping technology by Grabango in several of its GetGo Cafe+Market stores.
Giant Eagle’s move towards micro-fulfillment technology for e-commerce orders aligns with similar strategies by other retailers. For instance, Hy-Vee announced last fall its plans to implement MFCs across several markets, collaborating with Takeoff Technologies, a vendor also engaged with Albertsons and Wakefern Foods.
The adoption of MFCs by food retailers has been gradual. Mitchell “Mitch” Freeman, President of Takeoff, commented in an interview about the company’s agreement with Hy-Vee, emphasizing the growing interest among grocers in this technology. Freeman remarked, “We’re still very, very strong believers that this is going to be a very important part of a grocer’s portfolio in the medium term and long term.”
