Sri Lanka is pursuing a new development strategy for a proposed $392 million logistics hub at the Port of Colombo, creating an opportunity to attract fresh investment and strengthen the country’s position in regional supply chains. Following the withdrawal of the original investor, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority plans to advance the project through a public-private partnership (PPP) model and a competitive bidding process.
First announced in 2023, the project was intended to expand Colombo’s logistics capacity and reinforce its role as a strategic maritime gateway in South Asia. Located along major international shipping routes, the port plays an important role in container handling, cargo distribution and regional trade connectivity.
The revised approach offers Sri Lanka an opportunity to explore new partnerships, adapt the project to current commercial conditions and establish a sustainable framework for future development. Improved logistics infrastructure could support more efficient cargo flows, strengthen links between international markets and regional distribution networks, and create opportunities for broader trade activity.
As global supply chains continue to evolve, Sri Lanka’s next steps highlight the importance of flexible investment strategies and long-term infrastructure planning. By seeking new partners for the proposed hub, the country aims to build on Colombo’s strategic location and further develop its contribution to regional maritime trade.
