ASEAN economic officials have advanced initiatives to strengthen regional supply chains, expand digital trade and support greater economic integration across Southeast Asia during meetings held in Manila under the Philippines’ 2026 ASEAN Chairship.
The discussions prepared key initiatives for consideration at the ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Meetings in September, with priorities including digital transformation, support for micro, small and medium enterprises, technology development and stronger regional supply chain connectivity.
A proposed ASEAN Semiconductor Roadmap was among the key initiatives discussed. The roadmap aims to strengthen the region’s role in global technology value chains by encouraging broader supplier networks and greater cooperation across the semiconductor industry.
Officials also progressed work on the ASEAN Economic Security Framework, which is designed to support regional economic coordination and strengthen supply chain preparedness.
Digitalization was another major focus, particularly for micro, small and medium enterprises that represent 99 percent of businesses across ASEAN. Proposed measures would support access to digital tools, financing and cross border electronic commerce, helping smaller businesses participate more actively in regional markets and value chains.
Preparations also continued for the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement, which is scheduled for signing during the ASEAN Summit in November. The agreement is expected to establish regional approaches covering electronic commerce, digital payments and cybersecurity.
The meetings further included trade consultations with major international partners and discussions on trade agreements, economic integration and regional cooperation. Officials also addressed the integration of Timor Leste into ASEAN trade frameworks.
Together, these initiatives highlight ASEAN’s continued focus on building connected digital markets, strengthening regional production networks and creating greater opportunities for businesses to participate in cross border trade.
