Vietnam is moving forward with plans to establish a large railway industrial complex in Hanoi as part of a strategic effort to build a robust domestic rail industry and support future infrastructure expansion. The development, covering about 250 hectares, has been added to the capital city’s master plan for a broader railway hub.
Under a recent government decision, the planned complex — located in the Chuyên Mỹ and Ứng Hòa communes — is designed to serve as a foundational facility for the country’s rail industry. Officials and consulting groups say the project will help reduce reliance on imported rail equipment and attract private investment into a sector that currently focuses heavily on maintenance and repairs rather than manufacturing.
The complex is intended to consolidate production of locomotives, passenger and freight cars, and components under one coordinated industrial ecosystem, increasing integration across the rail value chain. With the domestic rail network poised for significant growth — including planned expansion of high‑speed and urban lines — the new facility aims to support future demand for rolling stock and related products.
Building a local rail industrial base also fits with broader national goals to enhance logistics capabilities and supply‑chain infrastructure. Vietnam’s broader logistics strategy seeks to reduce costs, expand sector output, and position the country as a regional logistics hub by 2035, aligning rail capacity improvements with multimodal transport growth.
