Shipping and logistics leaders AP Moller-Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd have decided to suspend shipments through the Red Sea due to security concerns arising from hijackings, missile strikes, and drone assaults by Yemen’s Houthi rebels. This move, announced on Friday, reflects the increasing seriousness with which major corporations are approaching the security situation in the Red Sea. However, experts suggest that the impact on the world’s oil markets and energy costs will depend on the responses of global players to the emerging crisis.

Maersk attributed its decision to the heightened security situation in the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden over the past few weeks. Recent attacks on commercial vessels raised concerns about the safety of seafarers. Together, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd operate almost a quarter of the world’s shipping fleet.

The insecurity in the Red Sea has intensified due to Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7. Over the past 10 weeks, Houthi attacks on ships in the Bab el-Mandeb strait have increased. This strait, a vital route for international trade, sees 10 percent of the world’s seaborne crude passing through it.

The Houthis target vessels with Israeli ownership or those shipping cargo to Israel via the Red Sea. The ongoing attacks serve as part of a broader strategy to raise costs for those supporting Israel. The rebels aim to showcase their endurance in Yemen and assert themselves as a formidable part of the “axis of resistance,” which includes entities like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Syrian government, backed by Tehran.

The impact of these attacks on the oil market has been noticeable but not significant. Crude prices ended the week higher due to market concerns about the persistence of these attacks. As tensions rise, the situation’s outcome remains uncertain, and experts suggest potential implications for oil prices, insurance premiums, and supply routes.

The unpredictable nature of Houthi missile and drone attacks makes it challenging to anticipate their next moves. While closing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait would have a massive impact, experts doubt the Houthis have the capability to do so, considering the likely swift and stern response it would trigger.

The global community, including major players like China, India, the Gulf Cooperation Council states, Iran, and Western powers, may increase pressure on the Houthis to reduce hostile activities in the Red Sea. Military bases established by various nations in Djibouti could contribute to limiting Houthi actions in the long run.

The ongoing conflict in Gaza and the resulting Houthi activities pose economic risks, necessitating preparedness from the shipping industry and the global community at large. As tensions escalate, major players may increase their presence in the region to ensure uninterrupted shipping.
