LONDON, June 26, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — The IGU’s 15th annual World LNG Report, released today, reveals that global LNG trade expanded by 2.1% in 2023, surpassing 401 million tonnes (MT). This growth underscores LNG’s increasing importance in the global energy landscape, connecting 20 exporting and 51 importing markets worldwide. However, the market faces challenges primarily driven by supply constraints.
The report highlights a fragile equilibrium in the LNG market, influenced by limited near-term supply availability despite robust demand growth. LNG’s role as a flexible and efficient energy resource continues to expand, with stakeholders prioritizing decarbonization efforts across the LNG value chain. Initiatives integrating renewable electricity, carbon capture and storage, and the development of bio-LNG are gaining traction to address environmental concerns.
Significant growth in LNG receiving capacity has shaped market dynamics, reaching 1,029.9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) by February 2024, marking substantial additions in 2023, especially in Europe and Asia. Notably, the Philippines and Vietnam joined the ranks of LNG importers for the first time in 2023.
Despite modest supply growth, the global liquefaction capacity is expected to exceed 700 MTPA by 2030, supported by new projects aimed at meeting rising demand, particularly in Asia. The United States led LNG exports in 2023, followed by Australia, Qatar, and Russia. Spot LNG prices declined in 2023, stimulating import growth in Asia, although price volatility remains a concern.
The evolving LNG market continues to adapt to increasing demand, market diversification, and technological advancements. However, uncertainties such as regulatory pauses, geopolitical tensions, and infrastructure limitations pose risks to market stability. These challenges underscore the industry’s resilience and ongoing efforts to navigate global energy transitions.
