In a significant development for EU-Chile relations, the European Parliament has given its approval to both the Advanced Framework Agreement (AFA) and the Interim Trade Agreement (ITA) with Chile.

The Interim Trade Agreement is set to be the first to come into force, requiring only the consent of the European Parliament, without the need for approval from EU Member States. During its implementation, the political and cooperation facets of the 2002 Association Agreement between the EU and Chile will remain operative.

Upon ratification by EU Member States, the AFA will supersede the 2002 Association Agreement, rendering the Interim Trade Agreement obsolete.

Chile’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Alberto Van Klaveren, expressed profound satisfaction with the approval of both agreements, recognizing their pivotal role in fortifying Chile’s ties with the European Union. Van Klaveren emphasized the transformative potential of the Advanced Framework Agreement, envisaging it as a catalyst for setting new benchmarks in trade and cooperation between the two entities. Notably, the AFA aims to address contemporary challenges such as combating climate change, promoting gender equality in trade, and fostering social inclusion.

The approval of these agreements signifies a mutual commitment by the European Union and Chile to deepen their partnership and enhance collaboration across various spheres. It reflects a shared aspiration to capitalize on the opportunities presented by closer economic and diplomatic ties, fostering mutual prosperity and sustainability.

Looking ahead, stakeholders on both sides are eager to leverage the frameworks established by the AFA and ITA to unlock new avenues of cooperation and capitalize on the synergies between the European Union and Chile. The agreements are expected to facilitate smoother trade flows, promote investment, and pave the way for deeper engagement on issues of mutual interest.

The ratification process by EU Member States is anticipated to proceed swiftly, paving the way for the full implementation of the Advanced Framework Agreement and the consolidation of EU-Chile relations on a stronger foundation. As both parties navigate the complexities of global trade dynamics, the agreements serve as testament to their shared commitment to fostering a more inclusive, sustainable, and mutually beneficial partnership in the years to come.
