Chinese President Xi Jinping recently met with Bill Gates, referring to him as “an old friend,” marking Xi’s first meeting with a foreign entrepreneur in years. The meeting took place at Beijing’s Diaoyutai state guest house, where China’s leaders traditionally receive senior foreign visitors. Xi expressed his happiness at reuniting with the Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist after three years, highlighting Gates as the first American friend he had met in the current year.

In a video published by state broadcaster CCTV, Xi emphasized the significance of the foundation of U.S.-China relations lying with its people and expressed hope in the American people. He conveyed his optimism for various mutually beneficial activities that could take place between the two countries, benefiting not only their citizens but also humanity as a whole.

While no specific details of the cooperation were provided, both leaders underscored the potential benefits of collaboration, even amid disputes over issues such as human rights, Taiwan, security, and technology.

Bill Gates, who arrived in Beijing for the meeting, expressed his honor at the opportunity to meet with President Xi. He mentioned the anticipation of engaging in important discussions, acknowledging their history of productive conversations.

In a blog post, Gates revealed that he and Xi discussed global health and development challenges, including issues related to health equity and climate change.

Xi’s international travels had been limited for nearly three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and his recent meetings have mostly involved other state leaders. Although several CEOs visited China following its reopening earlier this year, most meetings were held with government ministers.

Bill Gates stepped down from Microsoft’s board in 2020 to concentrate on philanthropic endeavors, particularly in the areas of global health, education, and climate change.

The last reported meeting between Xi and Gates occurred in 2015, during the Boao forum in Hainan province. In early 2020, Xi expressed gratitude to Gates and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for their assistance, including a $5 million pledge for China’s fight against COVID-19.

During their recent meeting, Xi also discussed the global development of artificial intelligence (AI) with Bill Gates, welcoming the presence of U.S. companies, including Microsoft, to bring their AI technology to China.

Xi stressed China’s commitment to pursuing common development with other countries rather than seeking hegemony. This aligns with China’s stance against what it views as hegemonic pursuits by the U.S.

Bill Gates also delivered a speech at the Global Health Drug Discovery Institute during his visit, emphasizing the need to utilize technology to address global health challenges. Additionally, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Beijing municipal government pledged $50 million each to enhance the institute’s drug discovery capabilities.
