The Marcos administration is making cybersecurity a top priority by pushing forward a new bill aimed at strengthening the country’s defenses against online dangers. The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is working on the proposed National Cybersecurity Bill, which targets weaknesses in government systems and aims to improve how the country deals with cyberattacks. This bill would impose penalties on organizations that do not report cyber incidents and foster better teamwork between government agencies, businesses, and international partners.
With the growing number of cyber threats, including an increase in cybercrime, the DICT is having a tough time attracting skilled cybersecurity workers because private companies offer better pay. Nonetheless, this year alone, over 20,000 vulnerabilities were found and fixed in government systems.
Experts are also advocating for the establishment of a national cybersecurity agency to conduct regular checks and ensure that security standards are met. As the Philippines gets ready for the upcoming elections, enhancing digital infrastructure remains a major concern for the administration.
