TikTok Shop Introduces Secondhand Luxury Fashion Category to UK Market

in Luxury Goods

TikTok Shop, the social commerce platform associated with TikTok, has extended its range of secondhand luxury fashion items to the United Kingdom. This move brings it into closer competition with various other platforms such as The RealReal, Vestiaire Collective, Depop, Poshmark, and Mercari. The U.K. launch follows the successful implementation of the secondhand luxury category on TikTok Shop in the United States, where it has been operational for over six months.

The introduction of this new category enables customers in the U.K. to purchase pre-owned high-end clothing, designer handbags, and accessories directly through the TikTok app. Initially, the offering will feature products from five U.K. brands: Sellier, Luxe Collective, Sign of the Times, HardlyEverWornIt, and Break Archive.

Since its inception in 2022, TikTok Shop has facilitated sales totaling approximately $1 billion or more. However, concerns have been raised regarding the impact of TikTok Shop on the main short-form video-sharing app, with some users alleging an influx of counterfeit and low-quality products. Counterfeit items pose a significant risk in the online resale of luxury goods, a challenge even major e-commerce platforms like Amazon and eBay have faced.

To address authenticity concerns, TikTok Shop implements an anti-counterfeit policy, promising a full refund in cases where a purchased item is proven to be counterfeit. Recent reports suggest discussions between TikTok Shop and luxury goods company LVMH regarding measures to combat counterfeiting.

All secondhand brands featured on TikTok Shop in the U.S. are required to possess certificates from third-party authenticators, with partnerships established with authentication services such as Entrupy and Real Authentication for designer handbags.

In the U.K., the five brands featured on TikTok Shop have their own in-house authentication procedures. However, TikTok Shop has not disclosed plans for incorporating additional secondhand brands at this time.

The launch of the secondhand luxury category on TikTok Shop in the U.K. reflects a strategic move to capitalize on the thriving market for preowned luxury items. This expansion also aligns with the growing trend of consumers embracing preloved fashion and provides secondhand brands in the U.K. with broader access to potential customers.

The popularity of secondhand fashion content on TikTok is evident, with over 144,000 posts featuring the hashtag #secondhandfashion and accumulating approximately 1.2 billion views.

This announcement coincides with developments in the United States, where the House of Representatives has passed a bill mandating ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, to divest its ownership of TikTok or face a ban in the country. This bill is gaining support in the Senate and, if passed, could have significant implications for American merchants operating on the platform. According to TikTok, the app generated $14.7 billion in revenue for small- to mid-size businesses in 2023.
