On Sunday, March 9, 2025, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) experienced power interruptions across its three terminals, prompting Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon to call for immediate corrective measures.
According to reports, the outages occurred as follows:
- Terminal 1: Power was interrupted from 7:40 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.
- Terminal 2: The outage lasted from 7:24 a.m. to 7:48 a.m.
- Terminal 3: Experienced a brief interruption from 8:00 a.m. to 8:01 a.m.
Secretary Dizon emphasized the necessity for backup power systems to activate promptly during such events, stating that a five-minute delay is “too long” and “unacceptable.” He noted that the generator should engage immediately, ideally in less than a minute, to ensure continuous operations.
In response to the incidents, Dizon has directed officials to collaborate with the New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC), the private entity managing the airport since September 2024, to implement immediate solutions. The NNIC is reportedly exploring long-term strategies, including the possibility of connecting the airport directly to the national power grid, thereby bypassing the current distributor to enhance power reliability.
These developments underscore the ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and operational efficiency at the country’s main gateway, ensuring minimal disruptions to air travel and passenger services.
