In late October, Isaias Hernandez’s TikTok video captured attention as he discussed the environmental impact of the Calcasieu Pass 2 liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Louisiana. Fast forward to Friday, and the Biden administration announced a pause on new LNG project approvals, a decision celebrated by environmental activists. TikTok, the video-sharing platform, has become a potent tool for young activists to criticize government policies, forming a significant political force.

TikTok has emerged as a platform where young people express opposition to oil and gas projects, collaborating with local activists. The Biden administration has recognized the influence of these young environmentalists, with top officials meeting with TikTok influencers to discuss pertinent issues.

As TikTok’s role in politics continues to grow, the platform has become a news source for many Americans, challenging traditional media. Recent reports indicate a quadrupling of U.S. adults who claim to regularly get news from TikTok, reaching 14% in 2023, up from 3% in 2020.

White House domestic climate adviser Ali Zaidi acknowledged the significance of young environmentalists, emphasizing their role in shaping policy decisions. However, some surveys, such as the Harvard Youth Poll, suggest a decline in enthusiasm among voters aged 18-29, raising questions about the Democrats’ 2024 prospects.

While the Biden administration did not comment on the role of social influencers in the LNG decision, the move faced criticism from Republicans like Sen. Dan Sullivan, who accused the president of prioritizing politics over climate science.

TikTok’s impact on politics extends beyond environmental issues, with young people expressing dissatisfaction with Biden’s policies on various fronts. As the Biden campaign gears up for reelection, efforts to engage Gen Z voters through TikTok intensify, seeking digital partnerships to amplify the president’s message.

The success of the TikTok-led campaign against the Louisiana LNG project underscores the platform’s potential to instigate positive change. Influencers like Alex Haraus and Elise Joshi, who met with White House officials, view this decision as a victory for social media activism.

While some experts stress the need for in-person activism to drive real change, TikTok influencers celebrate the platform’s ability to influence policy decisions. As social media activism gains momentum, the next target remains uncertain, but influencers are ready to tackle future issues that resonate with their audience.
