Kansas, USA: SPI Coatings, a Kansas-based company with headquarters in Shawnee, has made a significant breakthrough in insulation technology, transforming energy savings across various industries, including industrial, commercial, oil, and gas sectors. The company’s pioneering work addresses the longstanding issue of Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) and general insulation inefficiencies, a problem costing industries millions annually in maintenance, repair, and downtime. Founded by J.E. Pritchett, who collaborated with NASA on ceramic compounds research from 1989 to 1995, SPI Coatings has developed innovative insulation coatings through extensive testing. Over 35 years, more than 4,000 compounds were tested, leading to the discovery that only 14 met SPI Coatings’ stringent insulation requirements. This research culminated in the creation of products like SUPER THERM, a coating designed not just to reflect heat but to provide substantial insulation.
Unlike typical reflective coatings, SUPER THERM focuses on blocking heat load from the sun’s UV, visual, and IR waves. Tested under the US Federal DOE Weatherization Assistance Program, SUPER THERM demonstrated remarkable efficiency, maintaining roof temperatures close to ambient levels and significantly reducing interior temperatures without the need for air conditioning. Another groundbreaking product from SPI Coatings, HPC, was developed for retaining heat on surfaces. It notably won the EPA ENERGY STAR Award for Energy Savings in collaboration with Georgia Pacific in October 2023. HPC was shown to save 49% in energy costs, equating to a savings of $332,000 in a year for a single unit.
SPI Coatings’ insulation technologies offer not just energy savings but also a solution to the persistent problem of CUI, commonly caused by standard insulation materials. The company’s products represent a shift from traditional insulation methods, which absorb heat until they reach heat flux, thereby becoming ineffective. With 55% of its shipments being international, SPI Coatings is making a global impact with its innovative insulation coatings. While the detailed engineering report from Georgia Pacific was not included in the initial report, SPI Coatings has made it available upon request, underscoring the effectiveness and revolutionary potential of their technology in energy conservation and insulation efficiency.
