Saudi Arabia has reached an agreement to purchase Turkish drones, marking one of the significant contracts established during Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s recent visit to the Gulf region. This visit is part of Erdogan’s broader initiative to mend relations with Gulf Arab countries and seek economic opportunities for Turkey.

President Erdogan, accompanied by a delegation of around 200 business representatives, visited Saudi Arabia as part of a regional tour. During the visit, multiple memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were signed across various sectors, including energy, direct investments, and defense industries.

The drone agreement was formalized between Baykar, a Turkish defense company, and the Saudi defense ministry. Saudi Arabia’s Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman Al Saud emphasized that the acquisition of drones aims to enhance the kingdom’s armed forces’ readiness and support its defense and manufacturing capabilities. The specifics of the deal, including its financial value, were not disclosed.

Erdogan’s visit coincides with challenging economic conditions in Turkey, where citizens are experiencing increases in sales and fuel taxes. These measures are part of the government’s strategy to stabilize the economy and reduce the high inflation rate, which stood at 38 percent last month. With a significant current account deficit reaching $37.7 billion in the first five months of the year, Turkey is seeking support from oil and gas-rich Gulf states.

The visit also saw the Turkish lira hitting a record low against the dollar, underscoring ongoing economic challenges. The lira has depreciated nearly 30 percent against the US currency this year.

Turkey’s efforts to repair ties with Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), follow a decade of strained relations. The rift was deepened by regional conflicts, including the 2017 boycott of Qatar by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and Bahrain, and further aggravated by the 2018 murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul.

Recent developments, including currency swap agreements and significant deposits from Gulf states, indicate a warming of relations and potential economic cooperation. Erdogan is set to continue his diplomatic engagements with meetings in Qatar and the UAE as part of his regional tour.
