Saipem Reports Incident on Castorone Pipelay Vessel Offshore Australia

Saipem has officially reported an incident on the Castorone pipelay vessel during routine operations off the coast of Australia on January 30.

Fortunately, the incident resulted in no injuries to personnel, and the Castorone vessel itself did not sustain any significant damages, according to the company’s statement.

However, there was localized damage to the trunkline, and Saipem has confirmed plans to address and rectify the damage promptly.

Local media reports indicate that the incident took place at Woodside’s $18 billion Scarborough gas project. The project’s offshore gas pipeline installation was temporarily halted following the occurrence, which reportedly caused a substantial breach in the pipeline.

Australian news outlet WAtoday mentioned that Castorone experienced a loss of control during the pipeline installation, prompting a worker evacuation and causing damage to the pipeline.

It’s noteworthy that Saipem had secured the Scarborough contract in January 2022.

The National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) had previously approved Woodside’s environment plan in December 2023, outlining seabed intervention and trunkline installation activities for the Scarborough development in Commonwealth waters.

Situated around 375 kilometers off Western Australia’s coast, the Scarborough field’s development entails deploying a floating production unit with an initial phase of eight wells, followed by thirteen wells over the field’s lifespan. The gas extracted from the Scarborough field is slated for processing at the Pluto LNG facility, where Pluto Train 2 is currently under construction.
