A recent report published by the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) has shed light on the factors contributing to India’s comparatively weaker export performance. According to the report released on Monday, several dynamics, including tariff structures and free trade agreements (FTAs), play significant roles in shaping India’s export landscape.

One of the primary factors highlighted in the report is the presence of higher tariffs within India itself, juxtaposed with the lower tariffs observed in countries that are FTA partners with India. This tariff asymmetry poses challenges for Indian exporters, as they face relatively higher barriers when selling their goods abroad compared to foreign competitors accessing the Indian market.

The report points out that many Indian businesses opt not to leverage the FTA route for exports, despite the potential tariff benefits, due to the associated compliance costs. The cost of complying with FTA regulations often outweighs the benefits of tariff reductions, especially when import duties are already low. For instance, imports from India’s FTA partners frequently enjoy zero or low Most Favored Nation (MFN) duties, making it less appealing for Indian firms to navigate the complexities of FTA compliance.

Furthermore, the report underscores the need for India to revisit its trade policies and negotiate more favorable terms in its FTAs to enhance the competitiveness of its exports. By addressing tariff differentials and streamlining trade regulations, India could potentially unlock new opportunities for its businesses to thrive in the global market.

In light of these findings, policymakers and stakeholders are urged to consider strategies that promote a more conducive trade environment, balancing the interests of domestic industries with the imperative of expanding international trade. This may involve reevaluating tariff structures, enhancing FTA utilization mechanisms, and fostering greater cooperation with trading partners to foster mutual economic growth.

Overall, the GTRI report serves as a comprehensive analysis of the complexities underlying India’s export performance, providing valuable insights for policymakers and businesses alike as they navigate the evolving global trade landscape.
