Asia-Pacific markets commenced trading on Tuesday with a mixture of performances, in contrast to the notable achievements witnessed by the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite on Wall Street, which both reached new record highs.
Market participants across the Asia-Pacific region are closely monitoring the imminent decision from the U.S. Federal Reserve, slated for Wednesday, concurrent with the release of the May inflation report earlier the same day.
Investors are particularly focused on the Federal Reserve’s updated projections concerning the timing and frequency of potential rate adjustments. Currently, market expectations revolve around a singular rate cut anticipated for November, according to insights derived from the CME FedWatch Tool.
Following a day of public holiday closures, trading activities resumed in several Asia-Pacific markets, including Australia, Hong Kong, mainland China, and Taiwan.
Kicking off the day’s trading, Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 index surged by 0.42%, signaling an upbeat sentiment, while the broader Topix index also posted gains, rising by 0.34%.
In South Korea, the Kospi index rebounded from the previous day’s performance, recording a notable gain of 0.4%, while the smaller-cap Kosdaq index outperformed, surging by 0.64%.
However, the Australian market witnessed a downturn, with the S&P/ASX 200 index declining by 1%, reflecting a more cautious sentiment among investors.
In Hong Kong, futures contracts linked to the Hang Seng index were observed at 18,096, indicating a dip compared to the HSI’s last closing level of 18,366.95.
On Wall Street, the bullish momentum persisted, with the S&P 500 index advancing by 0.26% to reach a closing value of 5,360.79, while the Nasdaq Composite climbed by 0.35% to close at 17,192.53.
Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average also experienced a modest upswing, adding 0.18%, aligning with the upward trajectory observed in the S&P and Nasdaq indices.
As markets await the Federal Reserve’s decision and the release of key economic data, including the inflation report, investors remain vigilant, seeking cues for potential market movements and adjusting their positions accordingly.
