Metrc Launches Retail ID Cannabis Pilot Project in Alberta

A new pilot project in Alberta aims to enhance transparency and consumer confidence in the cannabis industry through the use of digital tracking technology. The initiative is a collaboration between Edmonton-based cannabis retailer Plantlife, cannabis producer Token Naturals, and U.S.-based technology company Metrc.

As part of the project, Metrc will integrate quick response (QR) codes using its Retail ID system, allowing consumers to access real-time product data. Information available through the QR codes includes lab test results, Certificate of Analysis (COA), product origin, potency, authenticity, and details on cannabinoids, terpenes, and cultivars. The goal is to provide consumers with greater visibility into the products they purchase while reinforcing the distinction between legal and unregulated cannabis markets.

“Alberta is leading efforts to make government and markets more efficient by reducing red tape and fostering innovation,” said Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction. “This pilot program is another example of leveraging technology to boost consumer confidence and transparency while improving safety.”

Health Canada has proposed amendments to cannabis packaging regulations that would allow the use of QR codes for various purposes, including inventory management and providing consumers with additional product details. While these regulatory changes could take effect in the coming weeks, potential shifts in government could impact their timeline. In the past, Health Canada has directed producers to remove QR codes from packaging.

Michael Johnson, CEO of Metrc, highlighted the role of technology in creating a more transparent supply chain. “Metrc Retail ID unlocks existing data from across the supply chain and makes it available to consumers,” Johnson said. “Rather than keeping product information siloed within businesses, we are ensuring that consumers have direct access to it.”

Token Naturals CEO Keenan Pascal stated that integrating Metrc’s system aligns with the company’s efforts to make cannabis purchasing more consumer-friendly. “By adopting Metrc’s Retail ID system, we are ushering in the next generation of the cannabis industry—one that prioritizes transparency, responsibility, and consumer engagement,” Pascal said.

Under the pilot program, Token Naturals will generate and print product-specific QR codes using Metrc’s software. These QR codes will be included with select products available at Plantlife dispensaries. When purchasing a participating product, consumers will receive a QR code sticker that can be scanned with a mobile device, leading to a landing page with detailed product information.

Ian Scott, vice-president of operations at Plantlife Cannabis, noted that consumers frequently seek more clarity on labeling and packaging details. “The technology reinforces the value of purchasing from the legal, regulated market,” Scott said. “These products undergo rigorous testing and safety measures. With Retail ID, consumers will have more certainty about what they are consuming.”

Throughout the pilot project, Metrc will work to refine the evaluation process by connecting cannabis growers, distributors, manufacturers, retailers, and regulators. The company has previously established track-and-trace partnerships with cannabis businesses both in the U.S. and internationally.
