IFOAM Organics Europe has released recommendations for the European Commission’s upcoming Vision for Agriculture and Food, urging alignment with the strategic dialogue’s conclusions to foster a sustainable, resilient, and competitive European agri-food system. The organization emphasized the role of organic farming as the only legally regulated sustainability system in its recommendations.
Jan Plagge, President of IFOAM Organics Europe, highlighted key priorities for reform, including revising the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to move away from hectare-based subsidies, strengthening farmers’ position within supply chains, and promoting sustainable public procurement practices. He stated, “This Vision is a unique opportunity for the EU to drive environmental, social, and economic progress in the agriculture sector.”
The recommendations advocate for increased support for organic and sustainable practices, fair remuneration for farmers contributing to ecosystem services, and a holistic benchmarking system based on a whole-farm approach. Innovations in organic farming, such as reduced reliance on synthetic inputs, are proposed as tools for both organic and conventional farmers to enhance sustainability practices across the sector.
IFOAM Organics Europe reiterated its commitment to working with EU institutions to achieve a shared vision for the future of the agri-food system, ensuring progress benefits all stakeholders.
