President Donald Trump’s recent update to tariff policy on April 9 will not introduce new tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico. The two countries remain unaffected by the global 10% baseline tariff announced earlier on April 2.
While Canada and Mexico were excluded from the global tariff, existing tariffs on their products remain in place. This includes 25% tariffs on automobiles, steel, and aluminum imposed earlier by the Trump administration. Additionally, the U.S. has maintained tariffs ranging from 10% to 25% on various imports from both countries. However, businesses from Canada and Mexico are able to circumvent these tariffs through exemptions under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
