The Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) has announced plans to adopt solar-powered retail outlets to enhance the affordability of petroleum products and increase market competitiveness. According to MEMAN’s Chief Executive Officer/Executive Secretary, Mr. Clement Isong, this initiative is expected to significantly reduce operational costs for energy marketers. In a recent interview with New Telegraph, Isong detailed the multiple benefits of switching to solar energy, including substantial cost savings, reduced carbon emissions, and a positive environmental impact. He emphasized the importance of this shift not just for cost reduction but also for promoting energy independence and the use of renewable energy sources.
The move towards solar energy is seen as a strategic response to anticipated changes in government policies, including the expected removal of electricity subsidies and the high costs associated with running diesel generators. “Our experience with members who have already transitioned to solar demonstrates that although there is an initial investment, it substantially lowers distribution costs in the long run,” explained Isong. MEMAN is also advocating for a broader transition within the industry, encouraging the shift from diesel to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for truck transportation, citing the cost-effectiveness of CNG compared to diesel. This initiative is part of MEMAN’s broader strategy to optimize the supply chain and enhance the affordability of energy products for end consumers. The adoption of solar power and other cost-efficient energy solutions is expected to play a critical role in shaping the future of energy distribution in Nigeria.
