India’s maritime industry — long considered a male-dominated field — is increasingly spotlighting the contributions of pioneering women who are breaking barriers, shaping careers at sea and inspiring a new generation of talent across shipping, ports and logistics.
According to sector insights from The Hindu Business Line, the rise of female leaders and professionals in the maritime domain reflects broader shifts toward inclusivity, skills diversification and strategic workforce development — a trend with implications for shipping, logistics and global supply chain networks.
At recent events such as India Maritime Week 2025, trailblazing women were recognised for achievements ranging from ship command to engineering and piloting roles. Notable figures include merchant navy leaders, chief engineers and marine pilots who have advanced technical and operational capabilities in what has traditionally been a male-heavy sector.
Government support and industry initiatives are also helping fuel this shift. Policies aimed at expanding training, scholarship programmes for female cadets and programmes such as ‘Equal At Sea’, designed to boost gender diversity among seafarers, have contributed to a meaningful rise in women entering nautical, technical and shore-based roles. These efforts coincide with broader industry moves to build more inclusive workplaces across logistics, ports, shipbuilding and allied supply chain functions.
Despite these advances, women still represent a small fraction of total maritime personnel, and gender equity remains a work in progress. However, the growing visibility of women in leadership and operational positions — from deck officers to engineers — signals a cultural and structural shift within India’s maritime and logistics industries that could enhance talent pipelines and supply chain resilience in the years ahead.
