US Treasury Warns of Potential Debt Default by June Amidst Ongoing Debate

United States Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has conveyed a letter to Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, cautioning that the federal government could exhaust its spending limit by June 1 if Congress does not act to raise the debt ceiling.

In the letter released on Monday, Yellen pointed to early June as the period when the government might face challenges in covering its expenses if the debt limit is not increased by then. The letter emphasized the urgency for Congress to take prompt action to ensure the government continues to meet its financial obligations.

While Yellen’s letter suggests the possibility of a default as early as June 1, it acknowledges the difficulty in precisely predicting the date when the Treasury might be unable to meet its financial obligations.

Monday’s development coincides with reports of US President Joe Biden calling for a meeting with Democratic and Republican leaders on May 9 to discuss spending and the debt limit.

Economists and experts have underscored the severe consequences of a potential default on the US economy, which could lead to a credit rating downgrade, higher interest rates, and a potential recession.

Increasing the US spending limits is typically a routine procedure but has become a contentious issue in recent years. Republicans in Congress are advocating for substantial cuts to social programs in exchange for their support to raise the debt ceiling this year. Conversely, the Biden administration is pushing for a clean debt ceiling increase without conditions, arguing that program-related debates should be addressed during negotiations on the yearly budget.

In response to Yellen’s letter, Democrats, including Virginia Senator Mark Warner, emphasized the urgency of raising the debt limit to fulfill existing financial obligations. Warner stated, “This is about paying bills we’ve already incurred. We cannot unleash economic catastrophe on the American people.”

Last week, the Republican-led House of Representatives passed a bill proposing a $1.5 trillion increase in the debt ceiling in exchange for $4.5 trillion in spending cuts for various programs. However, the bill is expected to face challenges in the Democrat-controlled US Senate, with Biden expressing intent to veto it.

The ongoing debate over the debt ceiling has heightened concerns, with the Congressional Budget Office noting an increased risk of the government running out of funds by early June due to lower-than-expected tax receipts.
