India’s raw silk production reached 34,042 metric tonnes (MT) during the April-January period of the 2024-25 fiscal year, according to data presented in Parliament. This represents an increase of nearly 10,000 MT compared to the 24,299 MT produced during the same period in 2014-15.
Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita attributed the growth to several government initiatives aimed at promoting sericulture and silk production. These initiatives include the Northeast Region Textile Promotion Scheme (NERTPS), the Integrated Scheme for Development of Silk Industry, Silk Samagra, Silk Samagra-2, and the Catalytic Development Programme.
The government is currently implementing the Silk Samagra-2 scheme through the Central Silk Board with an investment of Rs. 4,679.85 crore (US$ 547 million) for the period 2021–2026. The scheme provides financial support for various aspects of silk production, including post-cocoon processing, infrastructure development, silkworm rearing, and the establishment of kisan nurseries.
Under Silk Samagra-2, approximately 78,000 stakeholders have benefited from Rs. 1,075.58 crore (US$ 126 million) disbursed to states. The initiative supports both pre- and post-cocoon activities and aligns with the broader goal of enhancing silk productivity and self-reliance in the industry.
Financial assistance under the Silk Samagra-2 initiative has been allocated to multiple states over the past three years. Andhra Pradesh received Rs. 72.50 crore (US$ 8.53 million), while Telangana was allocated Rs. 40.66 crore (US$ 4.78 million) to implement sericulture development programs aimed at boosting silk production and efficiency.
Government-supported research and development programs continue to play a role in improving silk productivity and strengthening the silk industry’s contribution to the economy.
