Spain’s fresh fruit and vegetable industry has shown a mixed performance in the January-February period, with exports experiencing a marginal increase of 1 per cent, as reported by the country’s Department of Customs and Excise. These latest figures shed light on the evolving dynamics of Spain’s agricultural trade sector, providing insights into both domestic production and international market trends.

During the two-month timeframe, Spain’s fresh fruit and vegetable exports amounted to €3.4 billion, reflecting a steady but modest growth trajectory. Meanwhile, imports surged by an impressive 26 per cent year-on-year, reaching €802 million, indicating a significant uptick in foreign procurement of agricultural products.

In terms of volume, Spain witnessed a notable expansion in fruit and vegetable exports, with a collective increase of 6.5 per cent, amounting to 2.29 million tonnes. This growth underscores the country’s continued competitiveness in supplying fresh produce to global markets, despite challenges such as fluctuating demand and evolving trade regulations.

Breaking down the export figures further, vegetable exports emerged as a particularly strong performer, recording a substantial uptick of 15 per cent compared to the corresponding period in 2023. This translated to a total export volume of 1.3 million tonnes, with a corresponding export value of €1.96 billion, marking a modest increase of 0.6 per cent. However, it is noteworthy that the average export price experienced a decline of 12 per cent, dropping to €1.49 per kg, reflecting shifts in market dynamics and competitive pressures.

In contrast, the fruit segment witnessed a slight decline in export volumes, with a decrease of 3 per cent, totaling 974,511 tons. Despite this, the export value managed to grow by 2 per cent, reaching €1.46 billion, indicating resilience and adaptability within the industry. Notably, the average export price for fruits improved by 5 per cent, reaching €1.50 per kg, suggesting a favorable pricing environment for Spanish fruit exporters.

Turning to imports, Spain experienced a notable increase in procurement volumes, with imports growing by 10.5 per cent to reach 698,083 tonnes. This growth was primarily driven by vegetable imports, which saw a remarkable surge of 17 per cent in volume and an impressive 36 per cent in value. The vegetable category accounted for 402,758 tonnes of imports, valued at €323 million, highlighting the growing reliance on foreign sources to meet domestic demand.

Similarly, fruit imports also witnessed an uptick of 2.6 per cent, totaling 295,325 tonnes, with a corresponding import value of €479 million, marking a substantial increase of 20 per cent compared to the previous year. This surge in fruit imports underscores the diverse and evolving consumption patterns within Spain, driven by factors such as changing consumer preferences and seasonal variations in domestic production.

Commenting on the customs statistics, representatives from Fepex emphasized the robust dynamics of the import market in Spain. They attributed this trend to the complex interplay of factors, including regulatory requirements, production capacities, and market access conditions, both domestically and internationally. Fepex’s statement underscores the importance of understanding and adapting to these dynamic market forces to ensure the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of Spain’s fresh fruit and vegetable sector.

In summary, Spain’s January-February trade data for fresh fruits and vegetables paints a nuanced picture of the industry’s performance, highlighting both opportunities and challenges in the global marketplace. As Spain navigates the complexities of international trade and strives to maintain its position as a key player in the global agricultural sector, ongoing monitoring and adaptation to evolving market trends will be essential to capitalize on emerging opportunities and mitigate potential risks.
