Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has highlighted its commitment to the “Make-in-India” initiative by achieving up to 92% localization in manufacturing through a strategic indigenization roadmap. The announcement was made at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, where HMIL showcased its localization efforts in a dedicated zone.
In collaboration with Mobis India, HMIL has commenced local assembly of battery packs at a newly commissioned, state-of-the-art facility within its Chennai manufacturing plant. The Hyundai CRETA Electric is the first model to feature battery packs assembled at this facility, marking a significant step in the company’s electric vehicle (EV) production strategy.
Since 2019, HMIL’s localization efforts have resulted in foreign exchange savings of $672 million (INR 5,678 crore) and have generated over 1,400 direct employment opportunities. According to Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, Whole-time Director and Chief Manufacturing Officer at HMIL, these efforts align with the Indian government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” and “Make-in-India” initiatives, leveraging the country’s resources, skilled workforce, and engineering capabilities to develop advanced technology domestically.
The commissioning of the battery-pack assembly plant represents a milestone in HMIL’s localization and EV roadmap, with the CRETA Electric standing as the first Hyundai EV manufactured in India to feature locally assembled battery packs.
