Rice export prices in top markets Thailand and India increased this week, driven by improved demand and delivery of shipments. Both countries saw a rise in export rates, with India’s parboiled rice and Thailand’s 5% broken rice reaching their highest levels in weeks. India’s 5% broken parboiled rice was priced at $445-$453 per tonne, up from $440-$447 earlier in the month, while 5% broken white rice reached $450-$458 per tonne, compared to last week’s $445-$452. Exporters in India attribute this to stronger demand as buyers resumed placing orders.
Last month, India removed the export tax on parboiled rice and eliminated the floor price of $490 per tonne for non-basmati white rice, aiming to enhance its export competitiveness. Meanwhile, Thailand’s 5% broken rice was quoted at $510 per tonne, a level last seen in late October, up from $500 last week. Active demand from regular customers and delivery of shipments contributed to the price increase. Traders anticipate further price hikes but expect competition to intensify as India ramps up exports.
In Vietnam, 5% broken rice remained stable at $520 per tonne, according to the Vietnam Food Association. However, traders are offering lower prices in the range of $500-$510 per tonne, with slow sales attributed to dissatisfaction among buyers and sellers over current price levels.Vietnam’s National Assembly recently approved changes to the Value Added Tax (VAT) law, imposing a 5% tax on fertilizers starting in July next year, which traders say could reduce the competitiveness of Vietnamese rice in international markets.
